Mauricio Freyre, born in Lima, Peru, and based in Madrid since 2019, is an artist and filmmaker with a background in architecture. His practice operates at the intersection of film and installation, examining blind spots, accidents, and distortions in the writing of history and in the ways knowledge is produced and represented.

In 2025, he undertook a research residency as part of L’Internationale’s Museum of the Commons – Climate programme at Museo Reina Sofía, where he developed Errores Fundamentales, a project investigating the colonial history of cinchona. That same year, as part of Museo Reina Sofía’s Crudo programme, he presented the performance Fundamental Errors in the Early History alongside the 16mm film Limpia / Mal de ojo.

Both works were also presented in 2026 at Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, as part of a programme organised by FIDMarseille. In 2026, production began on the multi-channel installation Errores Fundamentales, with the support of Ministerio de Cultura de España and Centro de Residencias Artísticas de Matadero Madrid.

In 2025, his first feature film, Estados Generales, premiered at FIDMarseille. The film reimagines the return to the southern coast of Peru of a collection of colonial seeds from Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid. The film received the FIPRESCI and Talents awards at D’A and was presented in the official selections of festivals including IDFA, Pesaro, Thessaloniki, Ji.hlava and RIDM, among others.

Previously, his two-channel installation Interspecies Architecture was presented at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale (2022) as part of the Taiwan Pavilion.

His work has been presented at institutions including Museo Reina Sofía, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Louvre Auditorium, Círculo de Bellas Artes, Matadero Madrid, CentroCentro, Fundación Telefónica, TENT and Bisagra, among others.
